Furious Euro MP Mike Nattrass today called on the West Midlands’ Chief Fire Officer
to reinstate the senior Black Country fireman.
He made his amazing attack on fire
service bosses as he demanded a meeting with Chief Fire Officer Frank Sheehan to
resolve the crisis.
Watch Commander Mark Smith and Crew Commander Lee Evans, both
based at Brierley Hill, were sacked at the end of July.
But UKIP MEP Mr Nattrass
said: “The men are being prosecuted by politically correct morons. They should be
given back their jobs straight away.”
The sacking of the two firefighters, upheld
at an appeal on August 31, has caused uproar among fire service colleagues who are
threatening an all-out strike in support.
Mr Nattrass said fire service trainees had
always been advised to expect some kind of initiation and the trainee in this case
was not overly worried.
In his letter to Mr Sheehan, Mr Nattrass wrote: “The trainee
involved even sought a DVD as a reminder of the event. This is called character building
by those who do not suffer from being PC.
The attitude of the Brierley Hill are apparently
being dealt with in what appears to be heavy-handed manner for playing a prank on
a trainee. The Station Commander must have been aware that this kind of initiation
took place, so is he also on a charge?”
Mr Nattrass said that fireman involved in
life or death situations needed a strong, even dark, sense of humour to cope with
stress.
“I accept that if officers break the rules they must be punished but the punishment
should fit the crime,” he said.
“My business experience tells me a regime deciding
to have a future without humour risks bringing morale to an all-time low.”
Chris Downes,
Dudley borough rep with the Fire Brigades Union, today confirmed that the two sacked
firemen were now taking their case to an employment tribunal.
He said the DVD made
of the pranks played on the young recruit would be shown at the hearing as it was
“fundamental” to the case.
The firefighters were still in a “state of shock” over
the sackings, with five more men involved in the episode facing disciplinary hearings
on Friday.
Colleagues of the two were holding a series of fundraising events.
A West
Midlands Fire Service spokesman said that they could not comment on disciplinary
matters.
But media relations officer Mike Fox added: “We have received the letter
from Mr Nattrass and Mr Sheehan will be replying directly to Mr Nattrass in due course.”
